I slay blazes.
Sheree. (It means "dear" in French.) Aged 21 and a big ol' nerd, most of the time I think I'm hilarious. I hope my (multi-fandom) blog makes you a little happier. Click on 'tags' if you wanna know more about my blog; click on 'about me' if you wanna know more about, well, me.

Sometimes I liveblog things and make personal posts. My tags showcase my personality.

Marius’s name is basically the greatest thing because:

It’s descended from Mars, Roman God of war, and/or from the Latin root meaning male, and this all seems a bit odd with Marius and his dorky uselessness but he is the romantic male lead so it kind of fits if very uncomfortably.

But it’s also the male form of Mary/Maria/Mary, ie. the Virgin Mary, ie. the most famous woman like ever.

Marius has the traditional masculine coming of age story, with leaving his grandfather’s house and learning to live independently, he does that. Then he meets Cosette.

And he’s allowed to be a hilarious dork about it. He’s allowed to make out with hankerchiefs and write poems and pontmercy around basically. Marius is not required to sacrifice himself and his idiosyncrasies, to “become a man”, to earn her love. Cosette falls for this silly ridiculous romantic and it’s adorable.

And once he arrives at the barricades it becomes clear his strength comes from a place of romance, of love, of devotion. When he saves Courfeyrac and Gavroche it is a total “NOT MY DAUGHTER BEST FRIEND AND SON OF THE MAN WHO SAVED MY FATHER’S LIFE (NOT THAT I KNOW THAT YET) YOU BITCH” moment. Marius proves himself through his willingness to give his life to save the barricade, in his kindness to Eponine as she dies, in his attempt to protect Gavroche by sending him away (though that doesn’t really work out). When Marius achieves it comes not from traditionally masculine ideals of glory and honour and all that, but feminine ones of support and loyalty.

He’s also the Damsel in Distress and Valjean has to rescue him, but after that he’s returned to his family and reunited with Cosette and gets to marry her. Marius may have learned he can survive on his own, but that doesn’t mean he wants to. His happy ending is to be with the ones he loves, and that’s what he receives.

Classic Literature is full of boys who become heroes. Marius is a boy who becomes a heroine.

Tell me that’s not great.
